Toyota Corolla Cross 2.0 FWD: one is still possible

After the little Aygo was transformed into the city SUV Aygo X and the Yaris also got a slightly longer-legged derivation with the Cross with a rugged adventurous look, the Corolla family is now getting its SUV derivation as well. It is simply called Corolla Cross and has a more classic style. The hybrid will arrive in German dealerships at the end of November We took our first trip with the two-liter hybrid and front-wheel drive.

With the Corolla Cross, Toyota fills a gap in the model range that is not visible to everyone: until now there was a gap between the rather sporty C-HR, which is not particularly spacious at the rear, and the RAV4. Toyota marketing has recognized that it is too big and too expensive for many customers, while some are bothered by the C-HR’s idiosyncratic design and its not particularly large space. What to do? Tusch: The C-HR is now accompanied by the Corolla Cross, as a more classic SUV. It costs a little more than the C-HR but offers more everyday utility (e.g. up to 433 liters of trunk). We have already informed you about the new Toyota Corolla Cross, in the meantime we sat behind the wheel for the first time and we can say that it is pleasant to drive.

Toyota proudly points out that fifth-generation hybrid drive with a new battery and optimized control electronics is found in the Corolla Cross. In the case of the 1.8-liter 98-horsepower petrol engine, the system’s power has also increased significantly compared to the non-cross Corolla from 122 to 140 hp because the electric motor has been boosted from 72 to 95 hp. The 152hp two-liter petrol engine has increased torque a bit and the electric motor has 113hp instead of 109hp. The Cross system power has increased from 184 to 197 hp compared to the regular Corolla. The 2.0 all-wheel drive flagship model also has an electric motor on the rear axle. Compared to the Yaris Cross, this engine has an increased torque of 29 Newton meters and an output of 33 to 41 hp.

There is no single pedal feel

Power is delivered to the front wheels by a continuously variable transmission with no virtually programmed gear ratios. Consequently, there are no gearshift levers. The increased recovery can be activated on the selector lever. In driving program B (such as braking), the engine brake is noticeably stronger than in normal operation, but does not allow for single pedal operation. If possible, the Corolla Cross starts purely electrically and can travel a few kilometers with a light foot on the accelerator without using the internal combustion engine. Since the battery under the rear seat is quite small with a capacity of around one kilowatt hour (Toyota doesn’t want to give exact numbers), the petrol engine starts very quickly, which runs smoothly and without annoying noises.

What brought about the electronic tuning and the overhaul of the petrol engine is obviously difficult to assess without the possibility of comparison. However, the journey with the two-liter showed: In Eco mode the progress is rather limited, in Normal mode, however, the power delivery leaves nothing to be desired. However, if the driver switches to power mode, things come to life: even the small throttle controls spontaneously lead to noticeable acceleration and the Corolla Cross is almost gas hungry. It should go from zero to 100 km / h in about 7.5 seconds – that’s believable. The 1.8-liter regulates at 170, the two-liter at 180 km / h, when it comes to consumption Toyota sees itself at the top of the segment with values from 4.9 to a maximum of 5.4 liters according to WLTP.

Quiet motor

When driving at a brisk pace with frequent changes from gas to brake or even just under sharp acceleration, you have to accept that the electronics let the engine off the leash, but that the speed of this sudden increase in speed only follows with a delay. A pinch of too much gas is often enough for this acoustic effect, which takes some getting used to. Those who prefer a calmer driving style will experience the Corolla Cross as a mostly quiet hum, whose engine won’t bother anyone thanks to its good ride characteristics and not unpleasant sound.

In the all-wheel drive vehicle, the more powerful electric motor on the rear axle should also compensate for oversteer or understeer by means of a targeted distribution of power to one wheel or the other. So it helps to ensure that the car doesn’t push out of the curve or turn inward with the rear end breaking. How well it works must be shown in subsequent tests with this variant. Even without this torque vectoring, the Corolla Cross is a pleasantly easy car to drive on public roads. The direct, easy-to-use steering works very precisely and, without great concentration, the Corolla can be steered exactly where it should go, even when driving at high speed. This light weight doesn’t come with the price of noticeably stiff springs and shock absorbers – the Cross is a rather gentle type that doesn’t jerk hard even on bad roads and doesn’t cause any noticeable rocking or heavy rocking.

Lame Navigator

The digital cockpit is tidy and easy to read, but you can’t set up many different views. A large touchscreen sits in the center as standard, allowing you to immerse yourself in the wonderful world of electronics. Menu navigation seems mostly logical or at least intuitive to learn. Viewing the cloud-based standard navigation system map was very straightforward. However, the fact that it tends to lag a second or two behind navigation ads in turning situations is much more annoying.

With a little consideration, the space is enough for four adults, so the passenger shouldn’t be too big: his seat is not height adjustable and is mounted high enough from the factory. Passengers are best placed in the back and, of course, the driver. The full assistance equipment, which has been optimized in many functional areas, is pleasant, including an exit warning when a car or cyclist approaches from behind. The 360 ° view is also one of the points in favor of the Corolla Cross, while some of the hard and cheap-looking plastics and the tailgate that doesn’t open far enough are on the downside.

At the prices

The two-liter starts as “Team Germany” at 38,600 euros, as the “Lounge” costs 43,200 euros and also offers, among other things, leather upholstery on the seats, electrically operated tailgate, a good sound system, 360-degree cameras. degree and an optimized parking assistance system Memory function and automatic parking for frequently used parking lots. The supplement for all-wheel drive is 2,000 euros. The price should be reduced by this amount if you are satisfied with the 1.8 liter. As “Team Germany” it costs 36,600 euros, with a less luxurious “Comfort” equipment line that is even cheaper.

Sure, come on!

Oh no, not another SUV!
