Revolt at VfB Stuttgart? The calm of Matarazzo like an ace in the hole

Pellegrino Matarazzo will be in office for 1014 days on Sunday when he will host the 1. FC Union with VfB Stuttgart. The duel with the Köpenickers should turn the tide, even if the statistics speak against the Swabians.

To date, VfB have not beaten Union in the Bundesliga, drawn three and lost one. You also have bad memories of the capital ahead of the 2019 relegation, which meant the VfB’s third relegation from bel étage. A little more than six months later, Matarazzo took over in January 2020. Despite a difficult situation, he was third in the second division. Things were no less tense when the 44-year-old first extended his contract in the state in May. It means: Matarazzo has tough skin, he has overcome many crises with the VfB, including last season in the battle for relegation when the rescue arrived at the last second. The Italian-American is in fact a contemporary in his own right, it seems that the former defender can hardly be disturbed.

Games of fate for Matarazzo

These are not the worst omens for overcoming this crisis. Fatal matches for the coach will be the clashes with Union (Sunday, 19:30, LIVE! On kicker) and next Saturday with VfL Bochum (15:30). The fact that, according to the information of the kicker, the names of possible successors, explicitly Adi Hütter and Sebastian Hoeneß, are treated in the event of failure is ultimately only professional, despite all the trust in the current coach. Despite the precarious situation, no one expects Matarazzo to win by surprise against leaders Union. In relation to the match against Bochum, things seem different.

Beginning XI debut for Zagadou?

After all: Borna Sosa should return on Sunday, the Swabians have recently missed his offensive push on the left. It is also entirely possible that recently signed Dan-Axel Zagadou will make his starting eleven debut in the three defenders. In general, conversions seem inevitable, especially in the headquarters, where recently Atakan Karazor has allowed himself too much recklessness.

And there is also a need for offensive action, alone: weaknesses in the form of various forwards make it difficult for Matarazzo to make the final decisions. The VfB coach will certainly not be discouraged by the pressure situation, he is too calm for this – in a positive sense – which can be an ace in the hole in this situation.

A curiosity on the sidelines before the trend duel: in the Bundesliga only two coaches have been in office longer than Stuttgart, Christian Streich of Freiburg and Urs Fischer – who, among all, is on the bench at 1. FC Union, against which the team from Matarazzo wants to reverse the course.
