Last international match of the year: the German handball team lost to Spain at the EHF Eurocup – and is still convinced.
On Saturday night (15 October 2022) Germany lost 31:32 (13:13) to Spain at the EHF Eurocup. The German selection nearly equalized in the last second, but the pivot Tim Zechel only hits the crossbar and not the goal.
“I’m very proud of the guys, it was a very strong performance. We also deserved to win the game. It was a much better performance than against Sweden two days ago.”national team coach Alfred Gislason said. His team’s most successful pitcher was defensive player Kai Häfner with nine goals.
Spain remains a feared opponent of German handball players
The result was no surprise as Germany had lost all four of their last matches against Spain. Most recently, Germany won this duel at the 2019 World Cup, the coach of the national team was still called Christian Prokop.
The national team coach has long been called Gislason. Most recently, in the first game of this tournament, Gislason had to witness a 33:37 (16:19) defeat against Sweden. “It was very disappointing”Gislason later said.
This time around Gislason had no reason to be dissatisfied with his team’s performance. Unlike in the first match, the defense with the internal block Johannes Golla and Julian Köster was particularly convincing.
Slight errors in attack
In attack, however, small errors have crept in during the game. Spain quickly reached Germany’s first two-goal lead (10: 8/20.) Because the visitors threw away too many balls. It was mainly thanks to goalkeeper Andreas Wolff that the game remained tight.
“We acted with more confidence and had good defense phases. Andreas Wolff hit the target.”praised DHB sporting director Axel Kromer at half-time – and soon after he saw how his team continued to tighten the game despite a nervous restart.
Spain, Germany’s possible opponent in the quarter-finals at the World Cup, have now pushed the pace, led by outstanding player Alex Duschebayev. But Germany kept up and took the lead for the first time after the 22:21 interval (43rd). At 26:24 (38th) this grew to two successes, but the Spaniards returned to the heated final round.
Two friendlies before the World Cup
For German handball players, the EHF Eurocup is something like a test run for the World Championships in Poland and Sweden (11-29 January 2023). At the World Cup, the DHB team will face Qatar (January 13), Serbia (January 15) and Algeria (January 17) in preliminary round E. The games will take place in Katowice.
The match against Spain was also the last international match of the year, the DHB team will try two more times against Iceland before the start of the World Cup early next year.
