Tencent still on the throne
In the world of mobile games, two titles stand out when it comes to player spending. Figures from Statista and AppMagic show that the big hits of Tencent, Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile, still generate far more revenue than any other smartphone game.
In the last eight months of 2022, Honor of Kings grossed over $ 1.3 billion, making it the highest-grossing mobile game in the world. Tencent PUBG Mobile’s megahit MOBA also garnered 273 million downloads this year and over $ 8 billion in revenue since release.
Last year, PUBG Mobile was for a long time still the best-selling game of all time.
PUBG Mobile ranks second in the list of highest-grossing mobile games. Statistics show that PUBG Mobile is the most popular mobile game in the world based on monthly active players. This year it grossed $ 1.2 billion. That’s $ 200 million more than Genshin Impact’s third place finish.
Tencent’s two titles, Honor of Kings and PUBG Mobile, have grossed over $ 2.5 billion this year, more than Genshin Impact, Candy Crush Saga and Roblox combined.
AppMagic data shows that Genshin Impact players spent just over $ 1 billion on the game in eight months!
Candy Crush Saga and Roblox round out the top five list with $ 758 million and $ 612 million in year-to-date sales respectively.
Mobile games reach $ 149 billion in revenue this year and reach over 1.6 billion people
The increase in sales of the best-selling smartphone games shows how fast the entire market is growing. According to the Statista study, mobile games are expected to generate $ 149 billion in revenue this year, up from $ 140 billion last year. About 60 percent of this revenue, or nearly US $ 90 billion, is generated in the two largest markets, China and the United States.
Average revenue per person playing is projected to increase 16% year-on-year from $ 78.18 to $ 91.27. However, Statista predicts that the number of people playing on their smartphones will drop 10% this year to 1.63 billion. The mitigation of the SARS-2 CoVID-19 corona pandemic will be partly responsible for this trend.
However, the entire industry will continue to grow in the years to come, and the number of mobile players will increase to over 1.8 billion by 2026.
