The match between Malmö FF and Union Berlin was about to be canceled after firecrackers were thrown. On a sporting level, the Bundesliga club was able to celebrate in the end and scored the first points in the competition with a man down.
Sheraldo Becker scored the winning goal for Union in the 67th minute on Thursday evening (6 October 2022). Andras Schäfer saw the red card in the 45th minute. Malmö remain at the bottom of the group with a useless result of 0: 1 (0: 0), the Köpenickers now have three points after three games and still have a chance to progress.
Equalized first half – red card just before half-time
At Unionern, coach Urs Fischer returned to the bench after a negative crown test and the manager experienced a lively start, in which his team tried time and time again to get dangerously in front of the hosts’ goal with quick moments of change.
However, the first really good chance came from the Swedes, after a quarter of an hour Joseph Ceesay tested Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow from a promising position with a relatively central shot. It took until the 36th minute for the first really clear Union opportunity. Janik Haberer aimed his volley too high. Shortly before the change of sides, the Fischer-Elf had to accept a serious setback. Andras Schäfer was the last man on the center line to waste the ball and then pulled Anders Christiansen’s shirt – emergency brake, red card. With this bad news we entered the break of the interval.
25 minute break after the firecracker is launched
Although Malmö came out of the locker room with a lot of pressure: despite being outnumbered, the Köpenickers continued to try their luck from time to time, especially with long balls. Jordan Siebatcheu nearly took the lead from a tackle on such a ball, but was rejected by Ismael Diawara in the Swedes ‘goal (49’).
Masked Union Berlin fans
After 56 minutes the game was stopped by referee Halil Umut Meier because, among other things, firecrackers were thrown from the Union block, some on the pitch and others in other blocks. A “Böller” exploded right in front of the away block next to a folder. 25 minutes later, after a long wait, the announcement came from the stadium loudspeakers that the game would continue, with the threat that another cannon fire would lead to an immediate interruption.
“My feelings are divided”President Dirk Zingerle said after the match on RTL +: “It’s unacceptable. Nothing and nobody has anything to do with the lawn. This bothers me, I’m pissed.”
Becker’s sprint towards the winning goal
Shortly after the resumption of play, Rönnow had to show all his skills to avoid the disadvantage: Martin Olsson appeared free in front of the Union goalkeeper, but cleverly narrowed the corner. In the 67th minute, Becker then overcame the Malmö defense, sprinted half-right in the direction of goal and ultimately took the lead with a powerful low shot in the lower left corner: it was the Union’s first goal in the competition. Both opponents then had reasonable opportunities in the final stage, but the really big one was gone. The guests saved the victory over time.
