Before the match against Bayern Munich, SC Freiburg must fight for a draw against Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga.
On Matchday 9 of the Bundesliga match, Hertha BSC and SC Freiburg drew 2-2 (1-1) at the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Dodi Lukebakio (34th minute) and Suat Serdar (61st) initially fell behind thanks to Freiburg’s Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (23rd) on Sunday (9 October 2022), before the visitors managed to equalize with Kevin Schade (78 °).
While Hertha are still in 14th place with eight points after their fourth straight draw, Breisgau, unbeaten in seven games, are initially leading the table with 18 points.
Hertha BSC with a lot of bite
After their recent unbeaten streak, Hertha BSC also started confidently against Freiburg. With the high pressing and fast, no-nonsense forward play of fast forward Lukebakio and Chidera Ejuke, the hosts of the Berlin Olympic Stadium had a better chance of moving forward in the early stages.
However, Freiburg had a clearer structure and better opportunities even without their coach Christian Streich, who suffered from Covid, on the sidelines. Kyereh initially missed the close range command (22nd), but was only able to celebrate 60 seconds later. After a strong preliminary work by Ritsu Doan, Kyereh only had to push a back pass from the Japanese over the line to score 1-0 (23 ‘). Freiburg’s 13th goal of the season was the tenth from a newcomer.
Lukebakio transforms the penalty kicks
But Berlin did not let the deficit distract them from their line. The hosts attacked boldly at the start and relied on quick game changes. Especially Lukebakio has repeatedly put the SC defense in difficulty. The Hertha player runs away from the right before the tie. His attempted shot jumped onto the arm of Freiburg captain Christian Günter in the penalty area. Lukebakio safely converted the next penalty on the left to equalize (34th).
This gave Hertha BSC even more momentum. Coach Sandro Schwarz’s side still have two good chances to take the lead with Ejuke (38 ‘) and Jonjoe Kenny (42’) before the break. He then crashed in the second round. The Freiburg defense gave Serdar too much space in midfield. The Berliner moved to the center and completed the goal with a well-placed shot from 18 meters in the lower left corner of 2-1 (61st).
Inspired by the advantage, the hosts stayed on the trigger. Hertha started tirelessly and changed quickly. Freiburg are unable to catch their breath and can still be happy with the draw. Hertha goalkeeper Oliver Christensen misjudged a long free-kick cross and failed to hold the ball properly. Freiburg changed quickly and scored 2: 2 (78th) with Schade.
Freiburg first against Nantes, then against Bayern
