RB Leipzig have already scored three goals against Hertha BSC in the Bundesliga, yet they had to fear for success.
In reality, the match on Saturday evening (15 October 2022) had already been decided on a break. Leipzig had shot on goal five times and three times the ball was in the net. Emil Forsberg (25th minute), Abdou Diallo (30th) and Willi Orban (45th) scored the goals. Eventually Leipzig won 3-2 (3-0), but that was no longer a sovereign success.
Tension has built up from the middle of the second half when Hertha scored two goals in two minutes. First Dodi Lukébakio confidently converted a hand penalty (63 ‘), then Stevan Jovetić scored from the turn (64’).
Ejuke, Selke, Kanga – Hertha have chances but don’t score
In the final stages, substitute Chidera Ejuke was about to equalize, but his lob is not accurate enough (82 ‘). Then Davie Selke, also a substitute, failed with a low shot from Leipzig goalkeeper Jannis Blaswich (86th). And in the fifth minute of added time, Wilfried Kanga also hit the post with a shot.
“Luck was on our side. This is football, it can go fast. We have to learn from this and do better.”Forsberg from Leipzig said: “Great praise goes to the Berliners, they did a good job”.
Szoboszlai hangs up twice
It was a game you wouldn’t have predicted after the first half. Dominik Szoboszlai did the preparatory work for Leipzig’s first two goals. First he crossed and Forsberg closed with the thigh. Then Szoboszlai took a corner and found Diallo, who hit his head. Central defender Orban scored the third goal from close range.
RB climbs to ninth place in the standings with 15 points. These are spheres you can only dream of at Hertha. Previously, the Berliners had not lost five times in a row, now this series has come to an end. Hertha BSC are fifteenth in the standings with eight points.
HSV, then Augsburg, stressful days for Leipzig
The break will be short for Leipzig. RB will compete on Tuesday evening (18/10/2022) in the DFB Cup against Hamburger SV. On the 11th day of the Bundesliga, Leipzig will then have to go to Augusta (Saturday 22 October 2022 at 15:30). The next day, Hertha welcome FC Schalke 04 (17:30).
